Socket Announces Industry's First SDIO Bar Code Scanning Accessory for
Pocket PC and Palm PDA Devices
"Plug 'n Play" Device Will Enable a Host of Consumer and Industrial
Scanning
Applications with Minimal Impact on Battery Life

(NASDAQ: SCKT, PSE:SOK)
Newark, CA- 6/16/2003 - Socket Communications, Inc. , the Mobile
Connection(tm) Company, today announced the first SDIO bar
code scanning accessory on the market for devices with SDIO-capable
(Secure
Digital Input Output) slots. The SDIO In-Hand Scan Card plugs into any
SDIO
card slot on a Pocket PC, Pocket PC Phone Edition or Smartphone
running
BSQUARE Corporation's SDIO Now! software or the Palm Tungsten series
running
Palm OS v5.0. This affordable, small and easy-to-use product will
enable a
range of new business and consumer scanning applications, including
"Print-to-Web-Access", with minimal impact on battery life. The SDIO
In-Hand
Scan Card is one of three products in Socket's growing SDIO family,
which
includes a connectivity card with Bluetooth wireless technology as
well as
the SDIO WLAN Card that is also being announced today. (Please see
SDIO
802.11b WLAN Card press release for further details.)
"There is a growing trend for individuals and businesses to use bar
code
technology to automate their data collection processes," said Jack
Brandon,
Socket's senior business manager for scanner products. "Frost &
Sullivan
predicts the bar code equipment market will be worth an estimated
$2.75
billion by 2004 - a direct result of this trend. The use of bar codes
helps
maintain data integrity as well as increasing office efficiency,
lowering
costs, and improving the value of the collected data to management.
We've
developed the SDIO In-Hand Scan Card to be 'plug n play', affordable
and
extremely small to make this technology more widely available in the
PDA and
mobile device marketplace."
The Socket SDIO Scanner includes SocketScan(tm) keyboard emulation
software
that automatically enters scanned data into Windows or Palm
applications as
substitute keystrokes. It supports all popular barcode symbologies
including
UPC/EAN, Code 39, and Code 128. A Software Development Kit (SDK) is
also
available.
SDIO adapter cards are not only well suited for small mobile device
expansion, their usage is also applicable to embedded systems where
they can
be used instead of a module. As technology is reduced in size,
expansion
cards are offering more functionality than ever before. Today's
announcement
by Socket of the SDIO bar code scanner and WLAN cards mark a major
milestone
in the evolution of expansion options for portable devices.
The Socket SDIO In-Hand Scan Card is based on the open, industry
standard
SDIO interface. Powered by the PDA device, no extra batteries are
required.
The scanner enables a wide range of current and future scanning
applications, such as inventory management, shipping/receiving, route
delivery, field inspection, market research, patient tracking,
clinical
control, access control, and other mobile data-collection activities.
The
device is also ideal for consumer-based bar code scanning
applications, such
as scanner-assisted shopping and print-to-web-access.
Pricing and Availability
Socket's SDIO Scanner is scheduled for availability in mid-August 2003
through Socket's website (www.socketcom.com) and through Socket's
worldwide
distribution channels for an MSRP of $269. The Smartphone version will
be
released in the fall.
