- are pda screens bad for eyesight?
- Posted by badcloud on July 5th, 2003
that's basically it. are they? I have a treo 90, and I'm not sure what
the hertz value is on it, since I understand that anything under 75hz
is bad for the ol' peepers. I just can't allow myself to keep reading
endless ebooks without knowing that it's ok on my eyes.
any feedback will be much appreciated

Well, they seem to still be using them on Star Trek, Next Generation, so I
guess they must've decided they were safe along time ago, sometime in the
future!!!

thanks for the informative info. b&w, you say... I've been looking for
a way to change the color content (and lack of content) on the color
Palm OS to save battery life, but there just doens't seem to be any
user-friendly way of doing it. know of any hackmaster hack or the
like?

Good question for an eye doctor. I'm not one, but I'll answer anyway.
I'm pretty sure that such eye strain has no permanent effect. You
might be concerned about being unable to read as much as you want, or
maybe misreading, or because you might have trouble with some activity
(such as driving) for a bit after straining your eyes. I suppose
chronic strain (especially if it leaves your eyes blood shot) might
leave your eyes open to an infection.
I think staring without blinking is more likely to be a problem. This
is a common problem for folks who work with computers. Maybe less of a
problem for folks reading ebooks.
I _think_ focusing the same distance for long periods (as at a
monitor, which doesn't move), might let the focusing muscles atrophe a
bit, and thus increase the need for glasses,

Err, the problem with CRT monitors is that the image /is/ moving.
(It's moving at the number of vertical lines on the display X width of
the display X refresh rate )
B&W LCDs don't have a moving image.
Many (most?) colour LCDs don't have a moving image.
