Question about bluetooth and more
Posted by David Todtman on December 15th, 2003

I have been looking at various palm products including the tungsten 2 and 3.
I don't understand the value of bluetooth beyond the rudiments. For
example, I gather that if you and I both have a bluetooth enabled handhelds
we can exchange data. Also, I think it means that I can use a bluetooth
enabled cell phone to link to the internet for e-mail and web-browsing?
Correct?

I also think that if I get some sort of bluetooth hardware on my desktop
machine that I can link my handheld to my desktop computer if the handheld
is within 30 feet. I'd need to buy some hardware for my desktop, I reckon.
Correct? Well, I don't know anybody with a bluetooth handheld and besides,
as a professional, I practice individually and would rarely have need to
share data files (MS wore, Excel etc.) with another handheld! I wouldn't
use a dialup internet connection so the bluetooth--to--cell phone deal is
not of interest. As for linking with my desktop, I'd probably just want to
use a wire-type connection (USB).

I also gather that I can get one of those little cards to put into the card
slot of the handheld and that the card would enable me to use my
already-established home wireless network. This seems to make most sense
because I could sit at my kitchen table and update between my computer and
my desktop.

So, all-in-all I think a bluetooth capacity is of no interest or use to me.
Is there any other value to bluetooth I am not considering? Am I missing
something?

My no-need-for-bluetooth belief makes me think I probably do not need a
Tungsten for that purpose. But this begs the question, Other than
bluetooth, what could I do with a Tungsten t2 that I couldn't do with a
Tungsten E? I just looked at the comparison chart on the palm website
(http://store.palmone.com/gridFamily/...781#footnotes).

All this boils down to the only advantage of the T2 over the E is the voice
memo and bluetooth. Since I don't reckon I need/want bluetooth, and I don't
want to spend all that difference in money for voice memo, I reckon I ought
to buy the E model. Am I thinking correctly?

Thank you for any comments and input. I really appreciate the information
I've got so far. For a person who has no experience but wishing to make an
informed purchase decision, it is great to get the feedback.

Ciao,
David Todtman

Yes.

Yes. Note that the 30 feet distance is valid only if there are no
walls between the units.

The added benefit here is that while your PDA is in the cradle it will
also be charged.

You can. But Wifi-cards for SD-slot are rather expensive. Also, check
that the Wifi card actually works with a Tungsten. A quick look at
Sandisk indicates that it doesn't support Tungsten (yet):

No you are not, unless you are planning to use the handheld together
with a Bluetooth-enabled GPS-receiver and navigation software. But
connecting to a GPS can be done with wires - and that solution is far
cheaper than using a Bluetooth GPS.

You might consider a Tungsten C which has Wifi built-in. It comes down
to whether you can get a Wifi card that works with Tungsten and how
much that card costs in your neck of the woods. However, if you don't
need Wifi hard, go with the E and use the money you save for better
Christmas present for your SO.

I can't find any fault with your reasoning.

It seems to me that you are doing very well. I have a Bluetooth
enabled PDA (a Fujitsu-Siemens Loox 600 Pocket PC) and I use Bluetooth
a lot - but I use it for exactly the purposes that you don't need.
