Right, you don't have to buy the kit. You can pick up an SD card reader for
a low price at any electronics store, or I'm pretty sure RealPlayer can
install songs when you HotSync. Any SD card will do, though I suggest you
get a fairly big one. And the headset jack is the standard size, so you can
use the ones you already have.
The Palm MP3 Kit is mostly for people too lazy to get the various components
themselves.

If you use RealPlayer, you do not need a card reader. The music install (mp3
or RA) is done by RealPlayer, NOT during a HotSync. The palm MP3 kit is a
complete rip-off.
