I thought I would add to this conversation that Sony supplies supplies software with it's devices that allow you to accomplish both of these items. It has a version of Jot that allows you to use regular handwriting and also has software to allow you to connect directly to the memory stick installed on the unit.

No, it doesn't. They bundle Decuma Latin, which is not a version of Jot.
It's a very different product from a different company.
If anything, Decuma Latin is a clone/copy of Transcriber, as found on
PocketPCs, but has nothing to do with Jot.
Decuma Latin isn't handwriting recognition either -- it only recognises
individual letters, but not ligatures nor words. It also requires switching
between different "modes" to enter alphabetical (A-Za-z) letters or numbers
and symbols. Finally, letters outside the A-Za-z range like þ (thorn) and ø
(oe) can't be entered at all.
