- Windows Mobile 5.0 software and compatibility
- Posted by outmarcus@gawab.com on September 11th, 2005
Hello,
I just bought an HTC Universal (i-mate Jasjar), in my opinion the best
PDA+phone in the world on commerce today, powered by Windows Mobile
5.0.
What are in your opinion the main web sources for (shareware and
freeware) Windows Mobile 5.0 software?
Note: I think that the HTC Universal is a "Pocket PC Phone" in
Microsoft terminology. Not a "Pocket PC" nor a "smartphone".
How many (in percentual) of how much of the existant Windows
Mobile (before the 5.0) applications already works well on it?
Thanks
Mary

Just got mine as well. Did you see my posts about ActiveSync, and the extra
GPRS settings? I am still having problems with ActiveSync 4.0 but it's
doing o.k. at the moment. I've installed lots of things already. I've had
problems/didn't work with only 3 things so far:
Rhinoware (?) today screen plugin. It said it installed but just didn't
show up.
Radio Times PDA application - which is pretty serious for me.
Adobe Acrobat viewer actually said it couldn't be installed.
I haven't tried TomTom yet.

Can you please link these posts so that I read them?
My Jarjar will arrive to me this monday/tuesday so I have not tried it
yet..
Can you tell me statistically how many applications for older Windows
Mobile operating systems, and not specifically declared as WM 5.0
compatible, works well on WM 5.0?
What are in your opinions the best applications to add to it?
I'm very curious to know if it works, or when they will make it work,
in WM 5.0.

8/12 I'd say. I forgot to add that I haven't been able to get PGP to run
yet either. To be honest I've yet to find any software (including
Microsoft) that does specify WM5
Well, that's a personal thing :-) I miss my Radio Times TV Guide.

I bought it as a "MDA pro" from T-Mobile.
Very good question.
I have problems with TomTom CityMaps.

My plug...
We run a software store powered by Handango, and until the end of 2005 you
can have 15% in your purchases (but only once, so you better put all
software you need in your shopping cart:
http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?contentid=4923
But, he's the trick - for Pocket PC only we have a vesion of Handango
InHand, and you have another 15% discount code valid until end of September
(they're not cumulative):
http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?contentid=4958
My suggestion? Check what softwares you need and see if they are listed on
InHand. Buying from InHand you get a discount to use once. Then get the
other software you can't find on InHand with the other discount - or use the
discount later in the year when you need it.

Interesting. I live in Italy and I think that the "MDA pro" is actually
only available with "qwertz" keyboard and in german language, with
simlock or netlock that you will have the future possibility to take
off by paying 99,50 euro to T-Mobile.
The i-mate Jasjar, instead, is already available on Expansys with
"qwerty" keyboard and in worldwide english, and withour simlock nor
netlock.
You live in german, right?
I hope that they will solve them soon because I think that TomTom
CityMaps is a very good program to associate to GPS.
Does Route66 work instead?

I saw your Geekzone/Handango software catalogue for Windows Mobile and
I found it very good.
Can you tell me how many titles, in percentage, can I find in InHand
restect to the full list in the Geekzone/Handango website?

I'm using WM5 on an Audiovox SMT5600 and I have not found a single
Windows Mobile 2003 application that will install.

(
How much apps did you tried without success?
I hope that the 640x480 display of the HTC Universal is not another
problem for the already existent programs.

I take that back, I have just successfully installed Microsoft Pocket
Streets for Smartphone.
Other than that I've been trying apps that I used to use on my Pocket
PC such as SpbPocketPlus, V-Mobile Network Browser, Ostia and Pocket
Streets for PocketPC.

It's ironic the only thing you could get working isn't built for that
platform.

I've now been successful at installing SmartNES 1.2 and I've tested it
with a few ROMS (including Super Mario Bros and Megaman 2). I've also
installed TomTom 4.3 for Smartphone but it crashed at the voice
selection prompt so I never got it to load a map. Oh, and DoomSPV
works.

*drool* How much is it? Is it very heavy. We're wanted to create a
front-end to our
backoffice (currently a web app) and need to find a suitable hardware for
it.
(Our boss like Sony Errison but as developers .. we're hoping to be able to
use Visual Studio 2005
hehehe....)
As we're not in the US or Europe.. i have yet to see this ... Jasjar (ack..
it kept reminding me of jarjar binks...help)
in "person". Just wanted to know if our search is over.. i sure hope so...
Thanks.
Limsy.

I'd expect WM5 compatible apps to be showing up soon. I know for myself
I wasn't expecting retail WM5 units coming out until the beginning of
October so our WM5 compatible apps are all in beta...

The InHand catalog is just a subset of the Pocket PC section, with the top
sellerts in each category - and only the ones that are approved/tested by
Handango. It changes the contents every month or so, and you can update the
catalog from its menu.

Is it just me or is IMate seriously beginning to make a name for themselves?
As far as I can see this time they've even beaten the *announcement* from
HP.

Has anybody found a compatible Today screen plug in to show/switch running
programs? (like the one that came free with the HX4700 iPaq).
- Posted by adwb on September 15th, 2005
I found a task manager apparently written by HTC for smartphone. I've
been using it with my SMT 5600 as a speed-dial application. It's not
quite a Today screen plugin but it gets the job done.
