- Adding a New HD

Hi I want to add new HD to my computer and make it the Master drive and boot
from it. The HD that is there is small and my computer boots from this drive
and I want to transfer my data from the old HD to the New HD.
How do I do this and then later use the smaller HD for data?

Use the clone utility provided by the HD manufacturer of your new drive.

This is a common task and very easy to do. If you buy a retail hard disk -
which I highly recommend -- it will come with all the parts you'll need and
complete, illustrated instructions that walk you through the steps. You'll
also get a CD with all the software you'll need.
If that isn't enough, you can get even more details from the disk
manufacturer's web site, and their technical support will answer any
questions you might have.

I've usually bought OEM hard drives, which don't include software or the
hardware accessories (cable, screws, adapter rails to mount the drive in a 5
1/4" bay, etc.). They are less expensive than the retail packages.
Most of the extras in the retail package aren't particularly useful. The
original poster probably already has all the cables and mounting screws
needed. All of the major manufacturers make their utility software available
for free download. I believe that the software may require that one of the
drives on the system be of their make, but there should be no other
restrictions.
I can't say much about the quality of the free software, though, because I
have been using third-party software (Partition Magic, for example) for 7 or
8 years. It's not cost-effective for copying a single drive, but I acquired
it for other reasons.

This HD did not have a clone utility. What do I have to do? Doesn't Windows
XP come with something where you can transfer all the files to a larger HD?

Thanx Malke, this clears things up and is exactly what I want to do. The HD I
got is not exactly new but refurbished, a Seagate 36 gigs where the HD that I
want to transfer from is only 8 gigs, they are both 10,000 rpms.
I hope Seagate's website has a utility that will enable me to do this.

Full instructions should be available on a disk that shipped with the
new drive, or can be downloaded from the HDD manufacturer.
