That program will work even if the partition is hidden?

I believe the recovery partition will only work if it's on the same hard
disk as the rest of the system.

So I couldnt use the recovery partition to install windows xp onto the new
drive which would be slave.

You could use Ghost 2003 and clone the old to the new. It will move all
partitions from original to the replacement.

Correct.

The recovery partition is designed to erase (the rest of) your hard disk and
reinstall all the software that was on your computer when it left the
factory. Since the recovery routine is invoked during the boot process, it
can't be separated from the original hard disk.

What about Norton Ghost? I got this software and opened it and so far it
says it will copy the partition exactly as it is on this drive, and it will
copy ALL my existing files that I am using now.

The partition yes - but not what you need to make the partition work.

You have to use the clone drive option. This will copy all partitions
including Dell, HP, hidden, Linux or whatever. It will also copy the MBR
which is probably non-standard. You have to manually set the partition sizes
or it will adjust them proportionately resulting in the restore partition
taking up more room than it needs. Keep the restore partition the same size
as on the old drive. Adjust any remaining partitions as you like. I've never
tried this with Ghost but don't see any reason why it wouldn't work as well.
