Is it possible to transfer files (documents) from a drive that was the
system drive on a Linux machine to a PC with Windows XP Pro (with NTFS) by
connecting the linux drive either on the onboard IDE bus or as a USB2
device? Is there some software that enables this?

I don't have the foggiest idea about the Linux file system but we need to
retrieve some documents from a crashed Linux machine (motherboard failure -
and rebuilding it is not an immediately available option). All we know is
that it was running something called a "flavor of Redhat", the documents of
interest are mostly htmls, some graphics, and others created with OpenOffice
or StarOffice (not too sure). And there is nothing apparently wrong with the
drive itself.

Or can I install the drive on a borrowed Linux machine and connect it using
a crossover Cat5 cable to a Windows XP PC and do it that way? Or?.......

Any suggestions very welcome and much appreciated.

I haven't used it but there is a program called EXT2IFS which may help you.
(Google for it) Alternatively, you could mount the drive in another Linux
box and use a crossover cable or maybe just a flash drive.

Thanks - I did locate EXT2IFS and downloaded it now after reading your very
helpful and informative response.

Seems it will do the trick.

This is an easier solution than taking the drive over to another location
and hooking up to a Linux box and transferring the files in any manner!

download a live-cd linux distro (i reccomend slax, u believe its slax.com,
but use google to make sure). Put the hard drive in the computer, run the
live CD and you can either copy to a network share, burn a cd, or put on a
usb drive
