- corrupted or hidden hard drive
- Posted by franciz3@gmail.com on May 17th, 2006
Hey guys, I dont know if i'm in the right newsgroup but ill tell you my
problem anyway.
I'm trying to help my sister fix her desktop. She bought a new maxtor
80gb hard drive, I installed it, and everything worked fine. She can
access the new (80gb) hard drive and her old (40gb) hard drive. 80gb
is the master and 40gb (old) is the slave. I put a windows xp home on
the 80gb before putting it to master of course. Everything worked fine
.... untill my sister decided to format the 40gb hdd to use it as a
clean backup storage. However, the way she formatted it is.... she
right clicked on the icon (D drive) from the my computer and clicked on
"format." Then, she said the icon disappeared and after that... it now
takes about 15 minutes to restart her desktop. Everything else is
working fine though... (using the 80gb) We just can't see/access the
other (40gb) hard drive and of course the annoying long restart wait.
Right now, the only action i did is... i unplugged the slave hdd (40gb)
from inside the cpu, after doing that, the restart waiting is now
normal.. (less than 30 sec). I'm trying to get her 40gb hdd back.. so
she can access it again.. what should i do? help me please...

When you installed Windows on the 80GB drive did you remove the copy that
was on the 40GB drive?

I made the same mistake once and found that for some reason Windows on the
Boot (C drive) was using parts of Windows located on the second (slave)
drive. After removing Windows from the slave the problem no longer existed.

Not sure now, but I think I used disk manager to delete and then recreate
the partition. You may get a warning that the partition is in use!

Lets start over
1)Win runs fine with just 80gb drive?
2)Connect 40gb as slave, win boot takes ages and the cannot see, in Disk
Management, this drive?
If all above are correct, try www.bootdisk.com , create a win98 boot floppy
Disconnect 80gb, connect 40gb as master, boot from floppy and fdisk the hd
then try again with 80gb master 40gb slave
You may also care to download and create the floppy for the 40gb hd manu
checking utility and use this whilst the 40gb is connected as master.

i did what "DL" told me to do...
"create a win98 boot floppy
Disconnect 80gb, connect 40gb as master, boot from floppy and fdisk the
hd
then try again with 80gb master 40gb slave "
its working now
I created a win98 bootdisk... unplugged the both hd's.. plugged in the
40gb as the master drive... boot the computer w/ the win98 bootdisk..
typed "fdisk" ... i deleted all the partitions.. ( i found 4 )... i
created a new partition with all d space 40gb... (read 38gb only)..
shut down the computer and plugged in the 80gb back to master and 40gb
back to slave.. boot the computer... everything is back to normal :-D
and yes.. i can see/access the drive (40gb) to "My Computer" (i can see
the 80gb too of course) .... thanks guys for the help
