I posted this before, but received no response, so I am trying again.

Hi,

Having a problem where my CPU maxes out quit frequently when it never used
to. It does it especially with games (games that have requirements of like
PII 300, where I have a P4 1.7Ghz), but also with programs like
GoogleWebAccelerator, Limewire. I recently reformatted my computer from
scratch, removed all startup programs except Microsoft ones through
MSCONFIG, have no viruses (as per Norton), have no spyware (as per AdAware).
I did a benchmark test on my CPU which showed no errors, and I downloaded
and installed Intel Application Accelerator. I have no idea why it would
hover around 90% with these programs when they really shouldn't be hogging
all those resources and it never happened before. Running XP Pro SP2. Any
suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Are you sure that these applications weren't using all of the CPU
before? I know that a number of games use all of the resources
available regardless of the game's minimum requirements. I can play a
game like Starcraft on a P4 2.0 and it will max it out just like it did
on my previous K62-400.

Yes, they did max out before, however, when they do now, the games (and my
computer) become very, very slow (when they never did before). They will
only remain slow for a minute or two, and then will continue at a normal
speed. I have no idea what would be causing this sudden degredation in
performance.

Do you have disk indexing or Fast Find enabled?

FindFast was a primitive indexer that was installed with early versions
of MS Office. You probably don't have it. Try turning off the Indexing
Service and see if that makes a difference.

Start>Run>services.msc [enter]

Scroll down to the Indexing Service, stop it, and disable it. Check
other services, although don't change the settings for anything you
don't understand. Here are some links where you can research the

It shouldn't. But since the OP asked about the Indexing Service, I
answered him. It is apparent that he's got *something* running in the
background but without looking at his computer or having far more
details, it isn't possible to say what. He needs to figure it out and
researching what he finds by looking in Services is one place to look.
