They didn't call these drives "Death Star" for nothing. It sounds like
your drive has died. This is a physical problem and even if you could
get the drive to stay up long enough, repairing the partition table
will not help. The drive is toast. If you want to be sure, download a
drive diagnostic from IBM. Usually you will make a bootable cd or
floppy with the file you get. Boot with it and do a thorough scan of
the drive. If you get any physical errors, replace the drive.
