- Device not recognised
- Posted by M.S on April 17th, 2006
My p.c no longer recognises my Canon IXUS 50 camera, before i could just plug
and play.
It's not the camera, usb port or usb cable as i've tried these with
different devices, or on a friends computer, i've disabled my anti-virus,
uninstalled/reinstalled the software that came with the camera.
When i connect the camera, i get the ding-dong sound that informs me that my
p.c has recognised that something is connected to a usb port, but, before all
i had to do was goto my computer, then click on the camera icon. Now i can't
find the camera icon.
Thanks for reading, hope you can help.

When it's connected, right click on My Computer and select Manage. On the
following screen, click on Disk Management. Does it show up as a Removable
Drive on the right hand side of the screen? Is it assigned a drive letter?
The easiest thing to do to get the pictures to your PC is to use a card
reader. I have the same camera but the US version SD400 and have never
connected it straight to the computer as I prefer the reader.

Does it show in Disk Management? If it's not assigned a drive letter, it
won't appear in My Computer or Windows Explorer.

Use any of the following:
Start, Run, diskmgmt.msc
or
R-click My computer, Manage, Storage, Disk Management
or
Start, Help and Support, search term Disk Management, and follow the links.

No, it's not in 'Disk Management'...
One thing i've tried, and i hope will be of some relavence to you, when i
have the camera connected, if i go to device manager, it appears, when i
expand the 'Imaging Devices' tab, if i then uninstall the camera then reboot,
then connect the camera, i get notification at the task bar that 'New
Hardware' has been found, then a few seconds later, it notifies me that my
hardware has been installed and is ready for use, but, when i go back to 'My
Computer' it's still not there, i.e in the section 'Devices with removable
storage', this is where it used to be, and i'm sure it used to have a drive
letter (F
.
