I don't know if you still need help or not. I have read 100s of solutions
on the web with varying possibilities. I had just a little problem with my
CD/DVD and a lot with my floppy. I found the answer at
support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;140060. I copied my files
on an old win 95 machine then went ahead and formatted the disk. the quick
format didn't work but the create system disk did work, then the quick format
would work. The article above is the clue to what is happening as are the
answers you are receiving. originally, when the floppy was connected, the
usb device driver gets set up to read the floppy and until i added other usb
software--no problem. then i loaded some camera software and it wouldn't
work any more. removed the camera software, no help. i noticed though that
when i right clicked on the floppy in "my computer", it showed it as a mass
storage device with a RAW file type instead of floppy with a FAT file type,
because the disk didn't have the file type marker as described in the
Article. alot of other answers are unloading different types of software and
they all seem to be related to the usb port. the device driver had swithched
to a mass storage driver not the sfloppy.sys driver. after the format the
driver switched back. so XP will read those disks as long as it doesn't have
multiple devices assigned to the usb port so it doesn't have to look for the
file type identifier. i think if you try using an old machine to temporarily
offload your data, then reformat with the XP machine, then put the data back
on, it should work when other devices are assigned to the port and xp has to
try to figure out which one is hooked up. rebooting temporarily resets the
port until you add another device or software that affects the port. i hope
this was more help, not confusion. it costs $10 a month or for one month,
but experts-exchange.com has a guy name "pete long" who provided a very good
discussion of everything you can do, but he left out the part about the usb
resolution causing the problem. so get all the disks formatted with a file
identifier ( if you don't have an old machine to trade off on, the Article
tells you how to fix each disk manually), and then everything should work.
