Could you recommend a 3rd party hard disk diagnostic tool?

The last time I needed it I had a boot drive suddenly unusable due to a
data error. I could not even Ghost the drive to a new one. I ran
SpinRite on the drive and Ghost was able to copy the drive perfectly and

Try HD Tune, provides drive info and has an option to test your drive.
