Hard Disk not allocated a volume
Posted by Mrs Flash on April 18th, 2006

We have 3 JNC 20gb MP3 players. They have a Toshiba 20GB harddisk. One
player has developed a fault where Windows XP does not allocate it a volume.
The player is detected by Windows XP, shown in both device manager and safely
remove hardware. In disk manager it is recognised but not allocated a
volume. When I try to allocate it the next available volume Windows suggests
it needs to be initiiated by re-starting the pc.
I have tried uninstalling the drive, having windows reinstall, which it
does, but with no luck. It is running the latest driver, and the latest
version firmware.
I took it back to the retailer, who tried it on more than one pc and it
recognised it. It also went back to the licensed repairer who tried it on 7
pc's all of which recognised it. Both were able to see the player in My
Computer as the next available drive.

Try going to run,type:diskmgmt.msc In msc,L.click on the drive,go to actions,
all,select,"make drive active".If it is,or to get more info,open
cmd,typeiskPart
In DiskPart,type:list disk Then:list volume Is it listed...Type:HELP To
get all
cmds in DiskPart.

Thanks Andrew. Results of Diskpart:
list disk:
Disk ### = Disk 2
Status = Online
Size = 19GB
Free = 0GB
Dyn = [blank]
Gpt = [blank]
list volume:
Volume ### = Volume 4
Ltr = [blank]
Label = [blank]
Fs = [blank]
Type = Partition
Size = 19GB
Status = Healthy
Onfo = [blank]

Not sure of syntax for commands in diskpart so have not proceeded further.
Any further advice is gratefully received.
