- hard drive format: MBR
- Posted by briansmccabe@gmail.com on November 5th, 2005
Hello -
My brother gave me a 120GB hard drive so I threw it in a spare
machine. The machine boots up fine, the hard drive is seen in the XP
Computer Management utility (start->run->compmgmt.msc), but it's not
recognized in Win Explorer. The properties seen in Computer Management
indicate its file format is "Master Boot Record." I have never seen
anything other than NTFS or FAT32 in this place before, so I don't know
what that means.
I am wondering if I am able to get this disc recognized by my machine
and be usable, or do I need to reformat to NTFS, and if so, how do I do
that? Computer Management typically gives that option in a right-click
menu, but it doesn't on this drive.
Thanks in advance -

EDIT: by "File format" I meant "partition style" - sorry for any
confusion.
Thanks

posting).

I thought he meant that the manner of posting - a bit here and there (each
post progressing through the original problem) was due to juggling a
keyboard and a one year old. BTDT and those 3 posts are a good written
description of the experience....
