hi all, i have a very big problem.

i have 3 maxtor 200gb hd on xp PRO, and all of them partitioned with
partition magic.

yesterday i was installing xp pro on another partition, after it installed i
realized that neither the new OS nor the old one recognized one HD. the
strange thing is that the same exact thing happened last time i installed
XP, it totally stopped recognizing one HD back then too. and the data in it
arent lost... because if i use r-studio and scan the whole HD i can see all
the partitions/files and recover them (but it takes a lot of time!). so i
think that XP during installation does something that prevents the OSs from
recognizing that HD.

also if i try to run partition magic i get the following error:
Error 90 EZ-drive has been detected on drive 2, but EZ-Drive is corrupt. Run
the EZ-Drive setup diskette to correct this problem. For EZ-Drive support
contact your EZ-Drive provider.

and i never installed any ez-drive.

so my question is... WHY is windows XP ruining my HD table? and WHAT can i
do to fix it? there must be a tool or something that fixes everything so im
able to see the HD and its partitions again... i dont want to copy over
150gb of data with r-studio every time i install XP.

Then get rid of it, bootup with the old HD setup up disk that came
with the drive and remove ez-drive.

but im pretty sure there ISNT any ez-drive installed ever. what i dont
understand is why during XP installation something happens that my 3rd HD
isnt detected anymore. and i suspect it might have something to do with
partition magic but i have no idea why.

i dont have enough knowledge about how XP handles the HD, but if the HD is
good, the data is there because r-studio sees it and can backup it, then why
does this happen?

Long time ago Some installations of windows couldn't see a HD format'd
with PM, I haven't heard of it happening in a long while.

Ez-drive is a program allowing older bios the ability to read large
drives, it's sits in the master boot record, and is of no use to you
now; and removing it might help.

Just the basics make sure the Cables to the drive and MoBo are in good
shape and connections are tight.

Right click on "My computer", manage, and see if you can set up the
drive in the disk management.

Boot up with the XP CD and run FIXMBR for the drive your having
problems with.

it seems it happened something like that... altho in my case even the old
installation cant see that HD (but of course i can see it on bios and with
r-studio).

excuse me for the question... is the mbr on the boot HD only? because the HD
im having problem with now is the 2nd one.

yes i can see it, but it appears as "unallocated". at the same time im
actually scanning it with r-studio and it can see all the
partitions/dirs/files.

i think im going to wait r-studio to scan the whole hd and then copy all the
files on the 2 other ones (sigh, gonna be so slow to recover 100+ gb) and
then try that and see if it fixes the 2nd HD.

happen again and i dont know why. :/

All HD's have a MBR it contains the partition table for one, and
seeing the disk appears "unallocated" your's could certainly be bad.

r-studio doesn't operate by the partition table, but by reading the
sectors of the hard drive.

That would be a very good idea, then try FIXMBR on that drive, and see
if it brings it around.

Instead of Partition Magic, use XP's Disk Management to delete and
recreate new partitions on the problem disk.

I have frequently seen problems when people have used PM to set up their
disk structure prior to installing Win2k / Winxp.
Use the Win set up to set the hd structure prior to installing Win.
Once Win installed there doesnt appear to be many problems caused by 'then'
using PM to adjust the structure.

STOP blaming XP . Use the tools provided in Disk Management , and forget the
3rd party crap.

If you boot from the WinXP CD, you will be able to delete and create
whatever partitions you want to. Once that's done, you can install XP
on any partition.

what do you mean with "use the win set up to set the hd structure"?
