High speed mass storage device wont register in my computers
Posted by Gaya on December 14th, 2005

My external storage device, when connected to my USB port complains but is
detected but, is not detected under my computers and I can not access the
drive. Can you please help?

When I plug in my external hard drive, the following message appears:

" The USB Mass Storage Device is a HI-SPEED USB device and will function at
a reduced speed when plugged into a non-HI-SPEED port."

Apparently "there are no HI-SPEED USB host controllers installed on this
computer."

I am running windows xp home edition sp2 with the following host controllers
installed:
Intel(r) 82801 BA/BAM USB Universal Host Controller - 2442
Intel(r) 82801 BA/BAM USB Universal Host Controller - 2444

I have also installed service packs 1, 2 and 3. On the Microsoft page, it
states that the service pack 1 contains a high speed USB driver. So I should
have one too. I have also downloaded Intel Chipset Drive for my computer.

Sounds like the external USB device is designed as a USB 2.0 item and your
motherboard supports USB 1.1; that's why you get the errors. Go to Best Buy,
Circuit City, etc and buy an add-in PCI card that has USB 2.0 support.

Gaya,

You have USB 1.1 and not USB 2.0 - otherwise the controllers would
report "Enhanced" or USB 2 in the Device Manager listing.

You could purchase/install a pci USB 2.0 card if you have a free slot.
That would do it.
