How do you "switch off" a Linksys adsl modem/router ?
Posted by RJK on February 19th, 2006

I just fitted a Linksys adsl modem/router and there's no on/off switch on
it. I have its' transformer plugged into a "low profile" Belkin surge
suppressor on which my monitor sits, so I have a conveniently located power
button in front of me to simply power it off.

Is there a preferred way to disconnect and power it down, i.e. do I
right-click on the LAN connection icon in system tray and "disable" that and
then just kill the power to the Linksys, before XP shut down, or should I
shut down XP and then switch it off ? It all just doesn't seem satisfactory
to me, compared to a USB powered Speedtouch 330 modem that I've used until
now.

regards, Richard

I leave my cable modem and router (two different Linksys
boxes) on all the time, they are sitting on a high shelf and
are powered from my UPS.

If you right click, and press disable, itll just be disabled for use on your
xp account untill you re-enable it by right clicking...
It must have an on off button, preferably a switch? Look on the internet for
the model and make, or, look in the manual that came with it.

Most people just leave the router on, just power down your computer normally when you are done for
the day.

I just had another look all 'round it and there is a sort of "springy"
cut-out in the top "edge" with a depression that looks like it's moulded for
a finger - so perhaps that's it. Can't press it atm 'cause Windows updating
2 x XP Home OEM's.

Looking at the leaflets, or loading the cd-rom *.pdf manual is a good idea
.....I never think of that !

Thanks Dave,

There's nothing in the leaflets, or cd-rom *.pdf manual about an on/off
switch, and I pressed the indentation on the top edge and it clicked, and
out popped - on a hinge - a small gold "socket" that looks like one could
screw a small arial onto ..it !! ...so there simply is no on/off switch.

I'll do as you suggest, all one can do I suppose - i.e. quite XP but, I will
switch it off, don't want anyone nicking my bandwidth, not that that's
likely :-)

regards, Richard
