Intellipoint 5.2 -- not certified yet??
Posted by Mark Tangard on May 14th, 2006

Hi folks.

Installed a new monitor today. It worked fine except that it disabled my
IntelliMouse Optical. I reinstalled IntelliPoint (4.1) and all was fine. Then,
innocently enough, I remembered seeing mentions of more recent versions of
IntelliPoint. So I went to the MS website, and saw multiple invitations to
download IntelliPoint 5.2.

OK, what harm could that do? Downloaded and installed it. Or tried to. A few
minutes into the installation, the program says I'm trying to install a mouse
that hasn't been certified for Windows XP logo testing (or some such; I'm sure
you've seen the text). It "strongly recommended" stopping the installation.

OK. I did. Re-reinstalled IP 3.1 and all is again fine. But what on earth is
that message for? The mouse was purchased (new) well after the PC was purchased
and it's Microsoft's own mouse. They haven't finished testing their own stuff??
Am I misreading? Are they miswarning?

The PC is a 2-year-old standard (= not heavily customized) Dell 8300 running
Windows XP Service Pack 2 with 1GB of RAM. I'm pretty software-savvy but
hardware's not my strong point.

Any clues appreciated.
