Philips CD/RW

I have a problem with my cd-rw drive, It is a Philips CDD4851. It can
read and play disks just fine, but whenever I put a blank cd in it says
that the cd is full. The only thing I can think of is that the drive is
old enough to be a cd+ drive, I bought it in '98 or sometime around
there. If anyone has any advice other than get a new drive it would be
greatly appreciated.

Zariel, two Lite On cdrw drives I had lasted less than six months. Seven
years is a good run. You could try a cdrom drive
lense cleaner but I think you would be wasting your time and money. I
bought a LG cdrw for $23 a few months ago. They
are probably under $20 now.

Zariel,

The burning software you use may need to be updated see the two links here..
http://www.roxio.com/en/support/software_updates.jhtml
http://www.nero.com/en/nero-up.php
Also, see the update for the inbuilt XP CD Wiz here..
http://www.highmat.com/download/
A firmware update would be the last resort for the drive, if the flash fails
the drive may be toast, your call.. Newer and less expensive drives abound..
Seems to be three updates here for the drives firmware, investigate and read
up here.. http://www.cdfreaks.com/drive/347
Use the infotool to id your current firmware version, see here..
http://www.nero.com/en/Info_Tool.html
Read up on CD burning in XP here..
http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpcd.php
Hope this info helps..
