Smart Card Reader
Posted by dcatapcc on October 7th, 2005

I recently bought a smart card read (USB 2.0 SD/MMC Card Reader). When I
plug it in my desktop with XP Home running it sees the new hardware installed
and starts the New Hardware Installation Program. I don't have an
installation disk so I don't have any drivers. I also have a laptop with XP
Professional running and when I plug the same card in it installs it as a
disk drive with no problem. Is there any way I can install it on my desktop
without obtaining driver files from the manufacturer? I have tried that and
haven't been successful yet.

Thanks for any help.

Let the install wizard finish its job on the desktop machine.
It might not even go looking for driver files on a cdrom disk
but use files already present in the \winnt folder. And this
is also a part of the Windows Registry process.

Thanks for the reply. I think I have let the install wizard finish its job
but it continues to ask for a disk with driver files. Why is it acting this
way and the laptop is not? Are there driver files found in the XP
Professional not found in the XP Home? Or do I possibly have some settings
on my desktop that need to be changed?

Hi,

I may not answer your problem but what my problems are

I have installed pc/sc reader EZ100PU it installed properly
for the first time. I have downloaded the driver files from the
website. After doing that I uninstalled it and then downloaded the
smart card based window components from microsoft website but I could
install the software. But it is showing reader installed incorrectly
but when I uninstall smart card based window components many dll files
are missing and it is a big problem Mine is windows xp professional on
a desktop machine.

solutions: Donot install smart card based window components for windows
xp professional it is already installed in your system

But I am not sure for windows xp home please contact the software
vendor

Thanks for your reply. I too, have been able to install the reader on a
computer I have that has XP Professional. I have been able to go to a
web-site to download the driver for the Smart Card Reader, but it has not
worked as yet. Still frustrated.
