i have an hp pavillion t460.
now i want to upgrade the ram. what kinda memory should i buy? i it best
with 2x512, or just 1x1024+1x254 or what?

Either consult the owner's manual that came with your laptop (may be on
a CD) or call HP tech support to be sure. I looked for your specific
laptop in Crucial's Memory Advisor (see www.crucial.com) but that
particular model isn't listed.
