- win xp network problem

I have win xp pro on desk top and win98 laptop networked using linksys
pc100 card in laptop and crossover cable. win xp has Realtek nic card,
it will not connect to laptop, all lights are on, icon in tray shows
with !, limited or no connection. I also have win2000 pro which
connects with no problems. All drivers and systems updated, I'm
thinking xp doesn't like 98 and/or the linksys card?

Are the network cards working? I have encountered a similar problem where it
turned out that the physical network card connector does not work! Replaced
the laptop's "built-in" network card with a USB to Ethernet adapter.
