Here's a weird one!

I've created several AVI files - small (.5Gig) and large ( 9.0Gig).
I've used Nero to burn to a DVD.
In ALL cases except the 9.0Gig AVI I've been successful in creating the DVD.

However, on the big one, I got a "Calibration Error."
I contacted Nero and they told me that it could be due to a number of
things - most probably a bad burner.
I asked them why I was successful on the samll AVIs and not on the large
one.
They had no answer.

I called Emprex, the burner manufacturer and told them about the error.
They also said it was probably the drive.

I took the PC back to Fry's Electronics, who built it for me, and they
agreed and replaced the drive.
I tried to re-create the large AVI to DVD there and it worked!

I brought the PC home and tried it here.
It bombed again! Same error!

The only difference between burning it at Fry's and here is that I had been
connected to the Net here and not at Fry's.
So, I disconnected from the Net and tried again.
Same Error.

I reloaded Nero and tried. Same error.
I split the AVI into two equal parts and ran it again.
It worked on both but the motion pictures were jerky and shaky.

Does ANYBODY have any ideas?

and it gives the same error.)

have you tried writing the file to the hard drive first and then copying the
file to the DVD after testing it on the hard drive?

Of course the AVI is already on the hard drive. Can I create a DVD on the
hard drive using Nero??

Incidentally, I played the AVI (Large and smalls) with Windows Media Player
and they look fine.

Whenever I have trouble burning, I reduce the burn speed a notch.
You could try this using a test burn so as to avoid wasting another DVD.

I finally got a response from Nero that helps.
Here's what they said:
"Double Layer technology supports files up to 8,56 GB. So please use files
in this range and update your firmware"

So my file is too big! I told them the size when I first contacted them
and, I guess, nobody caught it.

I saw the 9 GB and wondered about that. Didn't mention it though since you
said you had also had trouble burning after splitting the file. Am glad
that detail finally came more to the forefront though.

To lessen the speed when burning, check the various settings in the burning
program before clicking the "burn" button. Usually the program will show
the highest speed that it thinks your drive can use for the type of disk.
It's not written in stone and can be changed by the user. Example: If 16x
is shown, try next level down. There's usually a drop down list for this
and it might show 16x, 8x, 4x; so you would change that to 16x to 8x.
