Windows do not delete compressed files through the disk cleanup utility,
windows compresses files that have not been accessed for a period of time.

Compress Old Files - Windows can compress files that you have not used
recently. Compressing files saves disk space, but you can still use the
files. No files are deleted. Because files are compressed at different
rates, the displayed amount of disk space that you will gain is approximate.
An Options button permits you to specify the number of days to wait before
Disk Cleanup compresses an unused file.

I now have 120,000 'compressed old files' that will not delete, even if the
box is ticked, there is still 120,000 still there afterwards , so which other
way can they be deleted?

This may help you,
Disk Cleanup Tool Stops Responding While Compressing Old Files
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=812248
By the way, you are **not deleting** compressed files, you are compressing
file that have not been accessed for a period of time when using the Disk
Clean-up Utility.

How do you know you have 120,000 compressed files? Where are you getting
this information?

On disk cleanup it states you can use Disk cleanup to free up to (What total
is there) of disc space on your 'c' drive. Below this it says files to
delete. All my boxes are ticked including 'Compress old files' which says
129,683 KB, which I assume was files. Anyway, the system should delete all
boxes ticked.
There is another box for how many days to compress files but, what number do
you put in there?

The option in Disk CleanUp is to compress old files not delete them!
129,683 KB is the size of all files to be compressed not the number of
files!
