- Can't boot from xp boot disk
- Posted by pookie1394 on October 28th, 2005
I created a bootini disk from bootdisk.com so that I could boot my notebook
after XP Professional SP1 stopped booting. It said the bootini.exe file was
ok but says that ntldr is missing. Also, I tried using the upgrade cd but it
keeps asking me to insert disk and hit any key. I went into bios and set the
floppy as my primary boot, the cd secondary, but it doesn't work. What's
happening and what's the fix? Thanks.

"Boot.ini" does not provide boot capability - main function is to designate
the default or optional Windows installation and provides a choice, in dual
boot setup, of which installation to boot. A major cause of "ntldr" missing
is failure of the system to locate Windows installation - Boot.ini should
look something like: "default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDO WS
[operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft
Windows XP Profe" - note that HD is not logically designated e.g. C, D, but
as (0).
You did not further discuss "...after XP Professional SP1 stopped booting."
as to what messages, if any, were received.
