Changing Computer Name & Desc
Posted by Laphan on April 28th, 2006

Hi All

Somebody has asked me to change the computer name and desc for each of their
WinXP Home/Prof machines to make them more legible on their workgroup
network.

Not got a problem in changing these details (you just go to My
Computer/Computer Name - right?), but will it have a detrimental affect on
anything, eg such as existing shared folder setups, etc?

If so, how would one easily make these work again?

Regards

Laphan

Hi Wes

Thanks for this, but as per Microsoft's usual guides, it doesn't quite
answer what I need to know.

I can see where I change the computer name and desc, but I need to know if
this will affect any network/share setup by doing this change.

I don't want to go through changing all of the computers like a bull in a
china shop and then find that all of the shares have gone up the swanny!

Any ideas?

Well, if you change the name of the computer, and it has shared
resources, you'd obviously have to go to any other computer that access
said shared resources, and change them to point to the new computer name.

Hi Bruce

I understand that but all users go into network neighbourhood to see what is
available. They don't have any shortcuts on their desktops.

Will these entries auto-update?
