Upgrading C: drive to larger HD.
Cloned using Partition Magic...also Ghost. Both gave perfect copy C:
drives and both booted up perfectly with all apps loaded.
BUT then it straightaway gives...

SVCHOST.EXE - Application Error.....Debug/Close.

Either option gives a frozen system with nothing responding.

I've checked the HD Boot order etc in the BIOS but always the same
result.

Reverting back to old C: drive is always fine.

XP doesnt copy all that well due to its built in
security...However,copying/mirr-
oring xp is easy with xp XCOPY...Simply set the new hd as slave to current C:
on same IDE cable,format the hd in diskmgmt.msc Once thru,go to run,type:
XCOPY C:\*.* D:\ /c/h/e/k/r Agree to all in the DOS window,once its thru,
its ready..Also,D: being the new hd,if asigned diffrent letter,then use that
letter instead....

The instruction at "0x7c9105f8" referenced memory at "0x00000010". The
memory could not be read.

Click on OK to terminate the program.
Click on Cancel to debug the program.

Ignore the addresses, which will be specific to the computer.

If this is what you are seeing then you have a problem currently
prompting regular requests for help. It does not have a simple quick
fix. Individual problems do get resolved but the causes and solutions
seem to system specific. Most are simply boot problems on a specific
computer but there are some where the user has cloned a partition.

svchost.exe is the process that assists the loading of services and some
applications. You can use Process Explorer to view the properties of
each copy of svchost.exe process on the system, in my case five, to see
the which services use each process.

I think you may be able to troubleshoot the problem by carefully
checking through what loads at start-up and uses svchost.exe.
Unfortunately there are lot of start-up items that do and that I think
is why one is seing so many individual solutions.

The first thing I would do is see if the cloned drive will boot without
error in Safe Mode. If it does that will gives clues to help take you
forward. You will also be able to use the system to diagnose the problem
further.

The Article above is a systematic way to pinpoint the problem.

Don't forget to check Event Viewer logs for information regarding Errors
that occur when you boot in normal mode. You can do this after the error
has occurred in Safe Mode.

What type of Windows XP CD do you have?

yes the error message is exactly as you have shown.
I am running Win XP Home SP3.

I will try booting into Safe Mode although I had a few problems with
even that when I started this process a couple of weeks ago.

I am assuming my previous methods of cloning were fine (P.Magic and
Ghost) as they both work at DOS level pre-Win boot.

Also another problem is that the system basically freezes on bootup
preventing me from doing much analysis. Still I suppose I could analyze
the working system and check out the SVCHOST loads there. It should be
identical. I saw a program the other day that shows the DLL's attached
to the svchost items...maybe that could help me track down the culprit?
