Defragging caused XP Prof To Crash
Posted by BouncingTiggy on October 3rd, 2005

I'm running windows xp professional, i defraged my pc and halfway through
defragging it crashed. Now it wont start up, it loads just past the bios and
comes up with "BOOT FALILURE INSERT BOOT DISKETTE INTO DRIVE A:/ AND PRESS
ANY KEY TO CONTINUE" Unfortunately I dont have a boot diskette and have no
idea how to make or get one that will work without an XP cd-rom as my
software was was pre-installed. I've tried everything I can think of but cant
get past the command prompt.

Please help, as I have important documents now trapped on the pc. Any help
will be grately appreciated. Many Thanks.

this sound's familiar

have you tried chkdsk in recovery console?
as it sound like your partition table or mbr might be a bit screwed.

to do this you will need a winxp cd do you have this?
if so boot from that (you may need to enable this in the bios)
and once the xpcd has booted it will give you 3 choice's
one of which will be to recover using the recovery console (choose
this), once at the first screen of recovery console (resembles dos or
console in unix)
you will be asked to select the operating system you wish to
recover(for those that dual boot)
or just ask you to type in your administrator password
(if you dont know this you to ask the people who built it or try to
reset with the p/word reset utility disk found somewere on the web or
hirens boot cd,ultimate boot cd)
once you have given it the correct password you then type :

chkdsk C: (if that finds any errors then run it with the switches)

chkdsk C: /r/p (this will scan ,find, fix all errors found)
if that works reboot and see if you can get to desktop if the same
error comes back ,go to recorery console again and type this:

fixmbr ( this will rewrite your mbr Master Boot Record)

if none of theese options work come back as you may need to rebuild
your partition table and that is a bit ehm scary but you will need to
use a a boot disk such as hirens (get from 9down.com) or ultimate boot
cd

hope this helps
and sorry i will not be held responsible for lost data
you still have the choice to find other help if you want it
