Defragmenting Blue Screen
Posted by king_bob on October 20th, 2005

My problem is two-fold, but both are related to defragmenting my c:
drive. I had not realized it but my TaskScheduler has not been running, for
a while. I thought that the defrag program has been running once a month
since last year, but in fact it has not run since Jan 04! I deleted the old
schedule, and reset it to run once a month, only there is a problem.
Once I reach the end of the TaskScheduler wizard, this msg pops up:
"The new task has been created but may not run because the account
info could not be set. The specific error is: 0x8007007a: The data area
passed to a system call is too small."
I have no clue what that means so I tried to defrag manually, that is
where I encountered the blue screen. When the defrag gets to 3% the blue
screen comes up and says this:
"A process or thread crucial to system operation has unexpectedly
exited or been terminated.
Technical Info: STOP: 0x000000F4 (0x00000003, 0x82CFE75C,
0x805F9F88)."
So, I can't schedule defrag to run, and I can't get it to run manually.
It hasn't been run since early 04, I think that I definitely need to defrag
my c: drive. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I forgot to say this in my 1st post, but I have tried running chkdsk /f c:.
I tried to defrag after chkdsk finished, but I still get the blue screen of
death.

Have you tried running any third party tool? Personally i would
recommend some third party tool (i believe some free ones too) to do
the job without hassles. If u want to schedule it to run regularly or
frequently, there are specialized software with advanced scheduling
features which will also run without interrupting other functions.

Thank you for your posts Denny and ppcc. Before I could try your
suggestions I ran defrag again just for the hell of it and it worked. I was
relieved that it worked but hopefully when it next runs I won't see anymore
blue screens of death. Thanks again.
