You should be able to right-click the start menu and select Open or Explore.
Then you can drag/create shortcuts in there.

XP Start Menu >>
Right click the Start button | Properties |
Start Menu tab | Customize button | Advanced tab |
Scroll down to and Check: Enable dragging and dropping |
Click OK | Click OK

Classic Start Menu >>
Right click the Start button | Properties |
Start Menu tab | Customize button |
Scroll down to and Check: Enable dragging and dropping |
Click OK | Click OK

[[Specifies whether you can drag items to the Start
menu.]] Also disables the right click menu if UNChecked.

Hope this helps. Let us know.

I tried but perhaps didn't explain to well my problem. trying to drag an item
from desk top to the "start" button so the item will show up in the start
menu when i put the mouse pointer on the item. above or below the "pinned
item". It seems i was able to do this before. i can do it if i use the
"classic" menu thoe, but like this one better. thanks for your help thoe.
appreciate any other inputs you may have
don.

Wesley:
tried your suggestions. it works with "classic start menu" only. not in
"start menu" for some reason. Got any more suggestions?

If you drag an icon over the start button and dont release it, does the start
menu pop up? If so, you should be able to drop it in there above/below other
items.
