Drive label problem in XP
Posted by Loretta on February 11th, 2006

Hi
I set up a computer with xp home oem. The computer has a cd drive and 5 card
slots.
XP set the drive to H (at least I think it was xp and not me ).
I need to either get the hard drive to be seen as C: or get the installs to
automatically go to H.
Thanks for your help.

Also need to let you know that the drive is partitioned. With the computers
stuff on the smaller partition. The main drive is the H and the second
partition is I
Thanks again.

There is a bug in the XP installation program whereby it fails to properly
identify and enumerate system drives. It letters removable drives first.
There is no way to change your system drive assignment except to disconnect
the card slots and reinstall XP. However, most programs should properly
identify the system drive regardless. Since you give no indication of what
installs you're talking about, no advice on that issue is possible.

Most issues can be addressed but a winzip file from hp is looking directly
at the c: drive and gives an error that C: is not accessable. It will not
let us change the location to unzip as when the error box is closed it
closed the unzip dialog box.

I see the problem. Maybe you could unzip it on another computer and
transfer the files to yours (e.g. by CD, floppy, network ). Some zip
programs would also be more accommodating re. changing the extract hardcoded
path..
