I happened on help > Support > advanced > log
shows hundreds of repeats of the message from today (no time stamp!), and
the next is a winword app error from last year.
Although the system seems to be working ok (no un sought error messages), is
this a warning that my HD is going to fail?

More likely that the cable is going to fail (strangely enough).... Mine took
about 6 months to actually fail but eventually it did. Change it and see
what happens.
The other thing you can do is update the chipset drivers of your
motherboard. If you don't know what motherboard you have, look at the
website of your PC manufacturer.
