- Driver installation process
- Posted by Steve on November 11th, 2005
I am running Windows XP Pro with SP2 and full current updates applied.
Recently the driver installation process has stopped automatically referring
to the Windows/...INF folder to find the drivers it needs to install the
like of USB flash drives or whatever.
For example tonight I inserted a new flash drive into my USB port. It
returned the error message "could not find drivers for this
device.............." etc. Upon clicking back to the previous page and
forcing it to look to the INF folder, hey presto, drivers found and
installed straight away.
I haven't the faintest idea what has gone wrong and it is an annoyance
rather than a critical problem but I would appreciate if anyone could shed
some light on this and how to return the process to normal,
Many, many thanks in advance,
Steve

Does the manufacturer's technical support web page offer any advice about
drivers?

Yes, but that's not the point.
The point is Windows XP OS is not looking towards the INF folder for them,
where they are automatically placed by installation software.

I'm having the same problem. I was able to plug and play things though my USB
ports, but now all of a sudden Windows XP won't install the drivers. What's
worse is that I can't even install the drivers manually. I try to point
Windows to the correct folder where the drivers are but it won't recognize
it. Help please!

When you are installing something choose the option
"Install from list or specific location", not he automatic one at the top.
Select "include this location" and point firstly to C:\WINDOWS\inf. If this
doesn't work the other 2 locations I point towards are either
C:\WINDOWS\system or C:\WINDOWS\system32. Either that or if you have
download a driver to a personal folder point to it.
Hope this helps a bit,
Steve
