I am running Windows XP Pro with SP2 and full current updates applied.

Recently the driver installation process has stopped automatically referring
to the Windows/...INF folder to find the drivers it needs to install the
like of USB flash drives or whatever.

For example tonight I inserted a new flash drive into my USB port. It
returned the error message "could not find drivers for this
device.............." etc. Upon clicking back to the previous page and
forcing it to look to the INF folder, hey presto, drivers found and
installed straight away.

I haven't the faintest idea what has gone wrong and it is an annoyance
rather than a critical problem but I would appreciate if anyone could shed
some light on this and how to return the process to normal,

The USB flash drive has an internal/hidden settings.dat file that when the
drive
is inserted it looks for the driver. Your settings.dat file was either
looking
in the wrong place or is not properly configured. Nothing you can do
about it for if you delete it, it will no longer work.

No, I used the USB drive as an example.

Be it a scanner, or a printer, or a flash drive or a modem - the whole point
is the windows driver installation process is not automatically referring to
the INF folder for the driver location. It is a software glitch that I'm
looking to rectify. I KNOW where the drivers are - the point is the computer
doesn't. I have to manually point them system to look towards either the
System32 or INF folder for to install ANY device.

My point is I want to fix the path where the system looks for drivers.
