Dual Core with poor performance, need help
Posted by dealy663 on October 31st, 2005

Hi,

I've just put together a new machine built around an Asus P5WD2 Premium
mobo. The processor is a dual core pentium d 820 (2.8Ghz) and the machine has
2GB of RAM. So far I'm not too impressed with performace of this compared to
my older 1.4Ghz P4 machine with 1.5GB of RAM. It seems that most of the time
only CPU #1 is being used heavily with CPU #2 rarely going above 30%
utilization. This is a fresh install of XP Pro, and the ACPI Multiprocessor
PC is listed in the device manager.

When I run intensive Photoshop CS2 actions CPU #1 gets pegged and CPU #2
hardly budges. But while this is happening mouse performance usually begins
to degrade some. The CPU's temerature averages around 43 C at idle and goes
up to 52 C under load.

Is there something that is possibly misconfigured in Windows that isn't
taking full advantage of all the hardware resources available in this machine?

Thanks, Derek
So I'm

1st task you should do if not already is to head to intel.com.downloads,
chip sets, software, download and install the chip set installation
utility,if you
run thier graphics, then get that download also. After all are
installed,reboot,
back in xp,open device mgr,system hardware,R.click on all,one at a time,
select,update drivers.

I've done all this and performance seems to be about the same. I've yet to
see cpu #2 draw a horizonal line in the task manager. But at the same time I
can tell that mouse performance is lagging when #1 is pegged.

What else can I do to verify that Windows is setup properly to run on my
dual core system?

I've seen mention of a hotfix related to dual core systems with ACPI but no
place to download this from.

Thanks, Derek
