- DVD/RW Drive not recognising CD's
- Posted by p.mc on January 6th, 2006
Hi
I have 2 DVD\RW drives on Eide as slave and master, both are DMA supported
and I use them mainly for burning on the fly.
Lately I noticed when I put any audio CD-R (both support read and write of
CD-R) in the master drive, it doesn't see anything there, although if I put
in a DVD-R disc it does, and even with a DVD-R in both drives, it fails to
burn on the fly.
I tried changing which drive to allow recording on and different
combinations, even updated both with the latest firmware but to no avail.
I'm getting frustrated now....Hopefully someone may have a solution?
(Master Eide).........Lite-on DVD\RW SOHW 1633s...(the problem drive)
(Secondary Eide)...Lite-on DVD\RW SOHW 1673s
(Software).............Nero v7 premium edition

Hi,
Have you tried running a CD lens cleaner disk?

Hi, have you updgraded Nero to V 7 recently? I had the same problem and
resolved it as follows:
Go to System Properties/Device Manager IDE ATA Controllers. Righht Click
Secondary IDE Channel and select properties/ Advanced Settings. Change device
1 Transfer Mode from DMA to PIO only - then try with a disk. if it doesn't
work set it back again.

Try cleaning the drive. This is doesn't help then there is a possibility a
laser has failed on the device.

Hi all
I have a wet and dry CD lens cleaner, but because it is a CD the process
wont start because of the issue I'm having, but still the drive does
recognise and play DVD discs, which leads me to believe that the lens must
be in working order.
Also I tried... "Peterhmk's" suggestion :
" Go to System Properties/Device Manager IDE ATA
Controllers. Righht Click
Secondary IDE Channel and select properties/
Advanced Settings. Change device
1 Transfer Mode from DMA to PIO only - then try
with a disk. if it doesn't
work set it back again."
Which funny enough was originally set to PIO only in the first place before
I changed it to DMA to see if that would resolve it. I have set it to the
original PIO setting now, but still no joy after a multiple array of
settings.
I've no problems showing in "Device Manager" or "Nero Info Tool"
So it looks as if the drive and laser are working, but I need to do
something that will let the drive recognise a CD rom??
I don't mind admitting I'm lost, so any more suggestions will be welcomed.

The DVD and the CD are read by separate "lasers", the CD one could have
failed.

Thanks Bob
I didn't know that, so that could be the answer. I wonder if there's a
D/Loadable Laser checker or diagnostics tool to confirm this?
Anyhow I'll give it more time before I go and buy a new optical drive, I'm
hoping for a painless £££'s miracle answer...Teehee!!

If you take it out and tap it soundly with a 10 pound maul, you will
find that the correct decision is then a lot easier to make <big grin>

If it was on PIO that indicates there were some errors. When the drive
has problems it will step down from DMA to PIO in an attempt to correct
them. Normally it should be running in DMA mode 2.

Hi all
Thanks for the support, it looks as if I'll have to put my hand in my
pocket....Dohh!!
BTW I mentioned earlier that it wouldn't burn DVD's on the fly, but it
turned out that
it was just a couple of bad DVD's I tried it with, so at least the DVD laser
is still working.
I wonder if it's still worth keeping that drive on the Primary Eide channel
and adding
another combi drive so I could burn 2 DVD's from one master disc??
Example:
Primary Eide............(Master)...DVD\RW....(fully functional)
(Slave)......DVD|RW....(dvd laser functional,
cd laser bust)
Secondary Eide.......(Master)...DVD\RW....(new additional drive)...(or
switch places with the bust one?)
"Would that work?
