I used to be able to erase a cd-rw from windows explorer, it was under
"FILE" menu.. now its not there, but the cd name and an arrow pointing
to another menu is... but no erase.. any thots? thnx

Right-click the icon for the drive in question under "My Computer". Choose
"properties" and then the "Recording" tab. There should be a checkmark in
the box for "Enable CD recording on this drive". If not, check it.

I can record on the drive, I can play on the drive. What I can't do is
erase the cd-rw as before. The "Erase this cd-rw" used to show up
under the FILE menu..now it does not. I have no way of erasing the
cd-rw is what my problem is. What you spoke of has never been checked.
That is for recording from the desktop.

Ok, this may sound like a "DUH" question, but are you sure that you are
inserting a CD-RW disk and not a CD-R disk? "Erase this CD-RW" will not
appear if a CD-R is inserted.

well, actually, BOTH! a CD-R AND a CD-RW - same problem either
disk....which begs the next question. HOW do you put something ON a CD-R
unless you can also W it? in othere words, if it says CD-R (assuming that
means "read", then what are you going to READ if it hasn't been WRITTEN to?
that is, it HAS to be writable in order to read anything from it...right? so
THIS may be a "duh" question, but how can a disk possibly be only R, and not
RW? i guess one would not read a book that had not been written - uh, maybe
i missed the first five minutes of the movie, or wasn't in school that day,
but something seems amiss here.

And anyway, the CD-R that i am trying to erase is marked
"something-something" (the title is irrelevant, but it's not for kids) in
magic marker, indicating (to me, anyway) that it is a COPY of something on
another disk, therefore it had to be written to....

CD-R means recordable and CD-RW means ReWritable. The CD-R can be written to
once and the CD-RW many times. Once the CD-R has been written to that's it.

Adding to what Ricky said...a CD-R cannot be erased, therefore any menu or
submenu items that deal with erasing will not appear.

you have definitely not done your homework regarding CD-R and CD-RW's....do
