it's been doing this on my computer for about an hour. i opened an email from
a friend and there was some kind of worm/virus. it seems like it's sending
out emails with the virus from my computer. i don't know what to do and if
anyone could help, i'd greatly appreciate it.

Make sure you have the latest virus updates, reboot the computer into Safe
Mode (Do NOT choose Safe Mode With Networking!!!!!) and run a virus scan in
Safe Mode.

But how do i put the computer in safe mode? thanks!

You need to press the F8 key just before the Windows XP loading screen
appears on your monitor. You should see a list with Safe Mode on it.
Another, more unique way to accomplish this is if you miss your F8
opportunity, turn the computer off as the Windows XP logo is being displayed
and power the computer back on. You'll see a message saying Windows was not
loaded properly and give you a list of modes to put Windows in. Safe Mode
is, of course, in that list.
