Hello,

For the last several days I have been unable to use explorer.exe to browse
my files and folders. When I open it up, it opens Ok, but when I try to click
on other folders and navigate around, the error comes up...

"Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are
sorry for the inconvenience."

....with the option to send error or not.

The box also says: "To see what this error report contains, click here",
which I have done and this is what it contains:

AppName: explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 ModName: kernel32.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180 Offset: 0001eb33

.... followed by a huge stack dump which I won't paste here (I can't copy it
from the error window anyway).

I have searched previous support requests in this forum on this problem and
have followed the advise of changing my profile/user password, but this had
no effect.

After several days I am at a loss as to what caused this problem and how to
fix it short of reinstalling WindowsXP Pro from scratch, which would be about
a 2 day job (full time!) to reinstall all of the dozens of appls that I a
running on my laptop - not a happy prospect

Can MS support assist me to solve this problem WITHOUT having to go the full
reinstall route? It would really be appreciated. All the MS Office and other
apps are working fine. The only problem is with explorer.exe

I should add to my previous post that I already tried a "System Restore" to a
baseline a few days before the problem appeared, but Windows told me there
were no changes to restore.

I have Norton SystemWorks 2005 installed and have run:
- One Button Checkup
- Norton Anti-Virus
- Norton WinDoctor
and ran SpeedDisk (in the vain hope that the defrag might over-write
whatever might have been causing the problem).

I also performed a "Windows Update" and ran AdAware SE. My PC is clean of
any viruses and spyware, and any problems found by the Norton's diagnostics
were corrected.

And yet... none of this fixed my explorer.exe problem with kernel32.ddl as
detailed above.

Or...
A legitimate program running in the background may be causing this. Disable
(for diagnostic purposes) programs such as pop-up blockers, security,
anti-virus, etc. Also... notorious for causing problems- Gator, Kazaa and
some others. You may have to reinstall, or not reinstall, a program.

There are other possibilities for KERNEL32 errors, including corrupted or
outdated video drivers

Start at Control Panel> Display> Settings> Advanced for information on your
video adapter/driver including (possibly) a link to the manufacturer's
website.

Unfortunately not Although Windows XP Pro is a vast improvement in
reliability over previous versions of Windows, it is still far from perfect.
I think my next laptop will be a Mac.

Whilst I haven't managed to weed out the conflict between explorer.exe with
kernel32.dll, I have found a work around by using my web browser Internet
Explorer iexplore.exe (as opposed to explorer.exe) to navigate my files and
folders. Just open your IE browser and type c:\ into the address bar and
you'll see that it can do basically everything that explore.exe can. You can
click the "Folders" icon in the menu toolvar and that will give you a folder
view of your file directory structure in the left hand side pane.

I am able to use IE with no kernel32.dll errors, except if I perform some
functions like the search facility, or emptying my trash can, and a few other
things. Then I get the kernel32.dll error again, but at least it's manageable
now.
