You seem to have left out what the problem actually is.

Tech support walked me through and said problem was in O.S.and that problem was with WIA. Is this enough info for you to make any suggestions? David.

Where does it display "the scanner cannot be detected"? Is this a windows
error message, or something from the scanner software, or what? Then you say
that the computer recognizes the scanner, but you don't say where it is
recognized. Not having that scanner, I'm not sure what you're referring to
as "modes" is this a software thing, or are you pressing buttons on the
scanner? Has the scanner ever worked? Has it ever worked on this computer?
Are you sure the cable is good? While you're perfectly sure you know what
you're talking about, no one here can actually see what you're seeing, so we
need you to tell us what's going on.
From what you've said, here's the suggestion:
Uninstall all of the software related to the scanner. That means the drivers
and any scanning software, imaging software, etc. Reboot the computer with
scanner disconnected from the computer. Make sure there's no trace of the
Epson or scanner software.
Then start the installation from the beginning, using exactly the method
Epson requires -- sometimes you need to install some of the software before
you plug in the scanner, and plug it in when the software asks, while other
software requires that you plug in the scanner and wait for the "found new
hardware" message. You need to do it exactly the way Epson requires.
Then try it again.

D.Currie I took your suggestion I uninstalled all info pertaining to my
scanner. I installed the new software and I get this message(The scanner can
not be detected. Please make sure the scanner is connected properly and press
rentry.) I press rentry, same message appears. I tried a new usb
cable(uninstalled and installed again) the same message. The message appears
on computer screen when I click on copy.(windows message. As I mentioned
before Epson's tech support told me to (1) in start go to programs(2) go to
Accessories (3) go to imaging(4) click on inaging icon(5)click on
file(6)click on select device"EPSON TWAIN 5" then click OK(7)click on
file(8)click on acquire image,at this point(windows message appears) Scanner
or Scanner handle error. When I told tech support that this error message
appeared he said it was a Microsoft problem,in the Operating System probably
a WIA problem.I thought(correct me if I'm wrong)that WIA drivers were to be
used for digital imaging and that it was used in Me edition. The scanner has
worked in the past with no problems. My granddaughter had unplugged the
computer and some usb connections. Thank You for the help so far any
suggestions? David

It sure sounds like the computer isn't "seeing" the scanner. If you plug
something else into that USB port, does it work? Are you hearing the windows
"boop-boop" sound when you plug or unplug the scanner? In the Device
Manager, is everything correctly listed under USB?

Answers to the questions you asked 1when I plug something else into that USB
port the other device works(it's an epson printer) 2 when I unplug my printer
a display comes up which reads(unsafe removal of device) that does no happen
when I unplug my scanner. "D.Currie", I also went into the device manager
under imaging devices it displays(Epson Perfection 1640)I'm not sure what I'm
looking for regarding the USB? I have 7 usb slots,on all of the following
what is in between ( these ) is under properties. 1 usb root hub (location 0)
2 usb root hub (location 0 ) 3 usb printing support (location usb printer) 4
and 5 SIS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller(PCI bus 0, device 2, function
3) 6 Generic USB HUB(General USB Hub) 7 Epson PCMCIA Storage Device (SP
785EPX Storage). I hope you can make something out of what I wrote,If you
need any more info please let me know, also thank you for the help so far.
