I get the following error every time I start up my computer.

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7000
Date: 11/5/2005

Computer: ULTIMATEX3
Description:
The PfModNT service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

From what I am able to determine, PfModNT.sys file resides in the
C:\windows\system32\drivers and the C:\Program
Files\Creative\SBAudigy2ZS\Program\WDM\Win2k_XP folders.

It is a file by creative (soundblaster) and the file description states:
PCI/ISA Device Information Service.

I am unable to determine anywhere (including creative's support site) what
is causing it and how to remedy it. I have very few startup items running
and occasionally my creative volume control does not appear in my task bar.
At other times, my default settings (5.1 surround sound) revert to 2.1. I
have had no luck yet on the creative support site, and was wondering if
anyone else has run into this error or has a clue on how to fix it.


I must also add that it always, immediately follows the following warning
(and I don't know if they are related):

Has the problem just started? What system changes have you made
immediately prior to the problem appear. Has your system always been
Windows XP.

Does PfModNT appear in the list of Services -Start, Administrative
Tools, Services. If yes place the cursor on PfModNT and select
Properties, Dependencies. Wait for the information to appear. What are
they? Is the service (if any) PfModNT needs running?

Thanks for responding....

I have noticed the (PfModNT...Event ID: 7000) problem in the system event
viewer for about a month. I never really noticed it before because I didn't
use the event viewer, so it may or may not have always been there. I have
always had those several problems I mentioned, with my old Audigy sound card
and the newer Audigy 2ZS. My system has always been XP and it has all of the
updates for windows, my sound card, graphics card, etc. Unfortunately,
PfModNT does not appear in the list of services, so I am unable to determine
the list of dependencies. As far as system changes, they are only the
updates I do as they come out.

See if PfModNT is listed under Non-Plug and Play Drivers.

Click the [+] next to Non-Plug and Play Drivers | Double click PfModNT if
listed

No, Unfortunately, it is nowhere in the device manager, under any of the
categories.

Strangley enough, I found a post on the creative web site that suggested I
disable any remote control settings in the mediasource player (I don't have
the mediasource player installed on my computer).

I do have a remote control with my ATI graphics card (which I don't use for
the most part since I switched from cable to satellite for my TV). It was
enabled on startup and since I almost never, ever use it, on a hunch, I
disabled the startup option and now for the past few startups, I don't get
the 7000 error anymore...how the two were related, I don't know, go figure.

Maybe in the future, I will try to reinstall soundblaster, but since there
are so many updates for it which take time to download and install, I will
hold off for the time being.

Thanks for the help, it was much appreciated. Now, if I can only get Norton
Ghost to stop hanging (occasionally) on startup, I will be set lol.
