I recently had to make a clean install of Windows XP Home due to spyware and
lack of security. I have original restore discs from HP but one has a crack
so wont install properly. So installed just Windows XP Home from another
disc. Everything works fine except video colour, max 32 bit instead of True
Colour like before. Also it doesn't seem to find the video out port (yellow
port). In 'Device Manager' there are two 'Video Controller & Video Controller
(VGA Compatable)' with yellow buttons on them with exclamation marks in them.
When I select them there are no drivers for them and can't find them anywhere.

Can someone please help me, I've already checked the HP site but no help.
Thanks.

You'll need to determine the manufacturer of the video card and download the
appropriate drivers directly from them. I did a similar installation a
couple years ago on my HP. In my case, the video was actually Nvidia. You
should be able to determine the manufacturer by going Start> All
Programs>Accessories>System Tools> System Information. Then under
Components select Display. The information listed should tell the
manufacturer of the graphics card.

When I do as you instructed, there is nothing listed for the display under
components. Any other suggestions. The TFT screen smashed on my laptop before
the new installation of XP so I am now using a standard 17" CRT monitor but I
want to be able to use my Tv as a second screen like I use to.

You need to find out the manufacturer of your graphics card, not your
monitor.

I don't think so. HP doesn't make all of the drivers available tp
customers. They only post some updates.

HP don't have drivers on the site they just have some program updates that's
all.
Dave I did as you said and nothing was listed under 'Display'. The graphics
are onboard as its a laptop.

You might have to try a free utility like AIDA32 to show your hardware
components. Google for it.

I have downloaded that utility and ran it but no idea what to do know. I
opened 'monitor' and there was nothing in any sections other than 'desktop' &
'multi-monitor'. So any other help would be great. Thanks alot for all your
help aswell.

Disregard what it says for Monitor. That's just the CRT that you're using.
You need to know what display graphics adapter your computer has. Using
AIDA32, select "Display" and then "PCI/AGP Video". What is displayed in
the Device Description window?

I'd suggest going back to HP to find out what graphics card was used in that
PC then.

I have already asked HP but got no where as they are not very helpful, they
wouldn't even give me the bios password to enable the infa-red port. That is
why I am here asking for help and getting no where fast.

If you've loaded a generic Windows XP instead of the HP version, then you
haven't loaded the correct driver for the graphics adapter that's in your
pc. You can download the right driver from the graphics manufacturer
(Nvidia, ATI etc). But you have to find out which one was used in your pc.
That can usually be done with one of the utilities such as AIDA32. I'm not
sure what to tell you to do next.
