External hard drive not showing up in "My Computer"

External hard drive not showing up in "My Computer": Posted by External drive not in My Computer on May 17th, 2006; I just reformatted my c drive and backed up to an external hard drive. I am
trying to recover the data from the external hard drive and it is not showing
up in "My Computer" The drivers are all installed and shows to be

Go to Start -> Run and enter diskmgmt.msc in the Open box.
Click OK.
Does your external drive show up in the bottom pane of Disk
Management?
What is its status? Does it show up as Online and Healthy? If
not, how is it listed?
Can you right click on the drive and assign it a drive letter?
