fast user switching - system hangs when second user starts
Posted by thedoc99us@yahoo.com on November 20th, 2005

I'm running XP SP2 professional in a small home workgroup
environment. Fast user switching is enabled.

This started happing several months ago. It used to happen about 10% of
the time. The frequency is increasing over the last few weeks to where
this now happens about 95% of the time.

-Start the computer. Three user icons appear.
-Click on an icon. No problem, the user starts up.
-Windows-L back to the logon screen.
-Click on a different user icon, the other 2 icons go away and Welcome
appears next to the remaining icon. At this point the system freezes at
this screen. There can be disk activity. The mouse pointer still moves.
The keyboard is unresponsive. You can get to shares that are on the
system from other computers in the workgroup. The only way out is to
reset the computer. The application and system logs have no unusual
activity before the reset.
-There is no problem if fast user switching is disabled and users have
to log out first.

I'm looking for ideas on how to troubleshoot this. Is there a way to
get a more detailed log of what is happening when the second user logs
on? Is there a way to remotely check see what process or thread is
hung? Can remote debugging be of use?

Thanks,

Doc
