File Sharing with a Win98 PC
Posted by John F Kappler on October 28th, 2005

Hello.

I have two users (I'll call them Bill and Ben) who until today were
running Win 98 PCs on which they both shared their My Documents
folders (via a LAN).

Today, Bill got a new PC running WinXP Pro. I've setup the network,
including allowing sharing, marked the My Documents folder for
sharing, both with other users and across the network.

As is usual (I've read a lot of the stuff about sharing on a mixed
network) the WinXP system can see the neccessary on the Win98 system
and access it fine.

However, Ben can see the folders on the WinXP system but it wont allow
him access.

Is there any way this can be enabled without going down the road of
giving Ben an account on the WinXP PC?

If I do have to give him account on Bill's PC, will he only be able to
see his own documents?

And is there any way to stop his account being visible on the login
screen?

If at all possible I'd like to keep this as simple as it was with
Win98!

TIA

JohnK

p.s. Before anyone suggests it, upgrading Ben's system to WinXP is,
for a variety of reasons, a no-no at this time.

What filesystem is being used on the XP machine? Win98 cannot
read/access NTFS formatted systems.

Not true, filing systems does not matter between networked PCs.

Then why can my Win98 machine not read my WinXP system when connected
via a LAN, but the XP machine can read the 98 machine?

Number of reasons, a firewall is blocking network share access, you do not
have file sharing enabled or your sharing permissions are not in order for
starters.

Make sure that all computers have TCP/IP installed. This is particularly
important with Microsoft Windows 95-based computers. By default, Windows
95-based computers do not have TCP/IP installed. If you are using computers
that run Windows 95, Microsoft Windows 98, or Microsoft Windows Millennium
Edition on the network, you can look for TCP/IP by using the Network tool in
Control Panel. If TCP/IP is not installed, you must install it to
communicate with Microsoft Windows XP-based computers on your network.
TCP/IP is always installed in Windows XP.

Thanks for the replies.

I have been through those articles but there doesn't seem to be
anything I'm not doing that I should.

On the XP system there is no firewall. Simplified file sharing is in
use. The My Documents folder is shared to all users and the network,
with write access also enabled.

Could it be the NTFS thing? Is there anyone out there who has done
what I'm asking?

TIA,

JohnK

I have Win 98, XP and a Linux box on my Network and all runs fine.

XP has a built in firewall which may be blocking access. Go to Control
Panel> Windows Firewall> Exception and make sure "File and Printer Sharing
is enabled".

Also make sure both computers are using in the same Workgroup name.

Try running the Network Wizard on XP and create a disk to use for the 98
machine. To do this type the following in the Run dialog box and follow the
prompts.

rundll32.exe hnetwiz.dll,HomeNetWizardRunDll

Also on the Win 98 machine, use the same User name and password that you use
for the XP machine.

Thanks.

I can confirm the firewall is turned off.

Am I right in thinking the different user names are causing the
problem? I dont really want to make them both the same....

Read Number 6. and 7 in this article about user names and passwords.

If you would like better assistance, I would suggest posting to this
newsgroup.

Thanks again.

I'll either try the other newsgroup or think of a workaround (might
move all the shared documents to the Win 98 PC and work that way).

It worked for Win2k <--> Win98. Same firewall and networking setup in
all cases. The only difference I could find is that the Win2k machine
was formatted with FAT32 and the XP machine with NTFS.

It's not much of an issue +for me+ anymore, actually, since I rarely
use the '98 system anymore.
