If I boot up my system, I get a blue screen with a message saying click on
user name to login but there are no user names listed. There is a Shutdown
link at the bottom of the screen and that works - ie, I can turn the system
off, do a restart, etc

I can Alt-Ctrl-Del and I do get a login dialog window but I can't get any
further. The account (only one) didn't have a password. If I try to login
with that account, it says the password (no password) is invalid. I also
tried to login as Administrator (that also didn't have a password) but that
doesn't work either (it said that local policy did not permint login with
that account). So, I can not login to the system.

The only option is OK. The repair continues and completes but I still have
exactly the same problem - blue screen after reboot, can't log in.

Any ideas what I should do next?

that I can see my directory structure along with my data. Just not sure what
steps I should try next. Note: I'm not deeply technical here....

Please post a copy of the Stop Error message.

I suggest you Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should
help by allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click
on the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties, Advanced,
StartUp and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck box before
Automatically Restart.

Enable automatic restart on system failure after you have captured /
copied and pasted the message in a further post here.

There will also be Error Reports in Event Viewer. Please post copies.

Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

Appreciate the reply but I don't think I can do as you suggest. I can't get
to the desktop since I'm not able to login at all per my post details. The
message I shared in my post is when I am attempting to do a repair
installation and I don't know what it means. At this time, even after the
repair installation completes, all I get on reboot is the blue screen with
the details I described and without being able to successfully login. Any
other suggests are definitely welcomed!

You had to enter a password to look at your files in the Recovery console?

You can do a side by side install. Boot from CD and specifically choose a different folder to install XP in (you then just delete this folder to uninstall). This will give you mouse and menus to explore the old XP. That error is usually suggestive of a mismatched version of files. It suggests that catsrc.dll is the wrong version.

But this file is not listed as part of XP

I haven't tried doing a System Restore. Is that the same / similar to
booting in the "Last Well Known Configuration mode (ie, hitting F8 upon
booting)? I have tried that and I get the same symptoms (ie, can not login
to Windows). Will this effect my data at all as it is not backed-up?

I am not getting the password is not valid message in the Recovery Console.
I am getting that message when I boot "normally" and try to login into
WIndows at this blue screen I am getting (after I press Alt-Ctrl-Del to get a
login window from the blue screen).

I noticed that I misspelled the file name in my original post - sorry about
that. It is not catsrc.dll but rather catsrv.dll, which I think is part of
XP and COM+ (whatever that is).

I did locate this file on the internet (can't remember where) and manually
copied it (using Recovery Console) to the c:\windows\system32 directory. I
then re-ran the Repair Installation from the XP CD but still get the same

Thanks for your replies. I've resigned myself to doing a complete
reinstallation (and re-format of my disk) as I've been messing around with
this for sometime now and that may be the easiest and quickest way to get my
parents back up and running and I guess it will also result in a clean system
as my guess is that they got some spyware or virus that has caused the
accounts to be "locked" or inacccessible when I boot the system. I'm ok with
that.

Here's my current question that I would appreciate your thoughts (and anyone
else for that matter).

I would like to get their data backup before I do the reinstall. SOme of it
is backup but not all. I have a USB drive that I can use to move the data to.

QUESTION: How do I actually get to the data in such a way that I can copy
it easily to this USB drive??????

I hoped that I could use the Recovery Console to do this since so far, it is
the only way I found that I can traverse the C: drive and manually get to the
data directory. However, the Recovery Console only offers the DOS copy
commmand which won't work due to the number of files/subdirectories and since
I have long file names. Note: The USB drive is accessible in Recovery
Console mode.

I tried copying to the USB drive the DOS XCOPY command, thinking I could
access it in Recovery Console mode and then copy all my data from the C:
drive. The Recovery Console mode would not run the XCOPY command so that
didn't work.

Any other ideas??? Is there any utility out there that I can boot from a
CD, will give me access to the directory on C: and allow me to copy files to
a USB drive? That's what I really need. Frustrating since I know the data
is there but can figure out a way to copy it so I can proceed with a full
reinstall.
