Help - lost files after system restore
Posted by Steven Siegler on February 12th, 2006

HELP! I lost all files in several folders on my desktop after a system
restore . . . I chose "Keep files" but after the restore, only the folders
were present and they were empty. Where did all my files go and is there a
way to retrieve them.

Thanks in advance.

Steve S.

Hi Steven,

If the files on the desktop were monitored file types, then restoring
the system to a date before they were placed there would cause them to
be removed.

List of Files and Folders System Restore Monitors:

If the restore process was preformed from within Windows, open System
Restore and choose "Undo my last restoration". The missing files should
show back up on the desktop when the process is finished.

Hi, thanks for your help. The problem I have is that I did six system
restores yesterday trying to resolve this issue. More specifically, I did
three system restores and three undos.

I assume, knowing a little about computer forensics, that the files are
still somewhere on my drive. Is there software to access files which have
been "removed" and, if so, can you recommend any? Thanks again.

Try restoring to the day before the file were removed. If they were
monitored files, and they were there that day they should be restored.

This utility may be of help.

Greetings,

I suppose powerful data recovery tool should help you bring data back.
Among them I can pose out Active@ Undelete or Uneraser (DOS). These are
truly powerful utils, that should definately help you.
